Advice to the wise coming to Boston this summer:
  1. Come early, don't stay late. (The Democratic Convention is in town a week later, and the town will be nuts!)
If you can come for the 4th of July celebration, I promise you won't regret it.
  2. Contrary to popular opinion, Macintosh users are coming to the show. If you're a vendor and you think no one will be here because of Apple's decision, you're wrong. Plus you're missing a great opportunity to sell products to those with deep pockets who might have spare change because Apple isn't here!
  3. Macworld Expo is the absolute first big trade show held in the brand spanking new Boston Convention Center which officially opens June 24, 2004. It's huge and according to one Mac user, ugly. Important: All signs in city for this center are marked BCEC only. Expect the unexpected and remember patience is a virtue! I
  4. If you pack your PowerBook in luggage on the plane, take a picture with you, or bring your receipt. (I just talked to someone whose PB disappeared from their luggage on Southwest Airlines, and they wanted proof of ownership.) WHDH Channel 7 in Boston recently did a report on lost items in luggage. Logan airport is one of the few with a surveillance system in place when airline personnel check your luggage, but it isn't foolproof.
  5. Logan Airport in Boston, although close to the Expo site, may not be the best place to land. You might find cheaper fares coming into T.F. Green Airport (PVD) in Rhode Island. It is a nice little airport, and an easy 45 min. ride to Boston. I usually fly from RI, as it seems less of a hassle. There is also a small airport in Manchester, NH. I've never used it, but Dancing Brook Design in NH tells me it's a full service modern airport without the hassles of getting in and out of Logan. Some NH hotels offer shuttles to Boston, and are significantly cheaper.
  6. There are 16 to 20 neighborhoods in the little walking city of Boston. (Don't ask!)
  7. You can walk or take the mass transit to all the interesting sites. Boston has the oldest subway system in America (1897), and they've even updated it once or twice.
Bring your picture ID with you at all times, it may be required even on the T.
The commuter rail is close by also. South Station is the only mass transit close to convention center until next year. 10 min. walk (.7? miles)
  8. My advice is to avoid walking and staying in high crime areas. According to the EPA site, the "most economically depressed neighborhoods with the highest population living below the poverty line are Roxbury; North and South Dorchester; Mattapan; East Boston; South Boston and Chinatown." Take the hint and stay alert when in these areas.
  9. The whole Boston metropolitan area is so small, if you want to rent or bring your car, feel free to stay in one of the nearby suburbs, especially Cambridge and Brookline. You can even go out a bit to Newton (5 mi.), Milton (4 mi.), Dedham (5 mi.), Chelsea (6 mi.), Medford (6 mi.), Quincy (7 mi.). (Your mileage may vary.)
  10. Boston doesn't use "crow flies" for miles, its more like as the cow turns. A mile here seems like more!
  11. MapQuest may or may not be reliable for Boston directions! The streets have changed radically and I doubt MapQuest has been able to keep up with roadway changes. I did use it recently for airport directions and they were right though. Don't be afraid to just ask for directions. People are pretty nice, gruff, but nice. (The streets have been changing on a weekly basis since the Big Dig started!)
  12. sign at the big dig
Big Dig Sign near Faneuil Hall
  13. Other cities use N-E-S-W for directions, but in Boston east means you're swimming, north is New Hampshire. Don't trust "just over there," get numbers of lights, and lefts and rights.
  14. Don't blame Boston for the lack of street signs! Blame the thousands of college students who flock to the city every Sept. and steal them.
  15. There are many hotels in the area, and the further from the convention site you go, the cheaper they are (and probably safer). Here's one list of close hotels to get you started
  16. Here's another list of hotels: Boston Hotels City Guide - Discount Lodging & Hotels in Downtown Boston (discount is a relative term!)
  17. updatedHostel Listings (serious cheap). Site includes detailed info. on what is a hostel and how to get a pass, if needed.
  18. If you want to drive to the Expo and stay in town, you can park your car at my place for free and take the T to your hotel. Car will still be there when you want to leave and it won't cost $200.
  19. Don't stay just for the Expo - there's loads of fun stuff to do in the city! Boston by Sea offers a free map for a self-guided walking tour along Boston's historic harbor.
  20. Boston Discoveries is a new tourista site offering tours of innovation in Boston and following the literacy trail. These tours and presentations look really interesting!
  21. In the interest of getting just a little political, don't miss the Freedom Trail. Preview the sites in the Discover Boston site.
  22. Some friendly bloke from New Jersey just told me that Boston is the number one sports city in the US. Alas, he made the mistake of telling someone in a bar he was a Yankees fan, which got him an earful. Generally, avoid conversations about sports with real-live Boston residents, they tend to be a bit fanatical (and totally obnoxious if you ask me). In case you don't know, we house the Boston Red Sox, the New England Patriots, the New England Revolution, the Boston Celtics, and a number of other semi-pro teams. The Patriots and the Revolution share a stadium in Foxboro, which is basically in the boonies. If you want to take in a game, baseball (Fenway Park) is the easiest; but we do have the most handsome soccer forward Taylor Twellman in the country. Ooops no home games utnil 8/6/04
  23. updated(I'm gonna get clocked for this, but I have to do it.:-) Want to do something really great and support a Macintosh family? Raines Cohen, writer for the former MacWeek, has a Mom who is an amazing glass artist. The best part is you can see her huge hand-painted work, The Vineyard, at the Boston Museum of Fine Arts, 465 Huntington Ave, Boston. (Green Line "E" Train (trolley)). Carol Cohen's art is all over the city and the world.
  24. updated As of July 5th there is NO smoking in public places in Boston. Shennanigans on W. Broadway (See User Group Soiree on Tues. night) has a terrace where you can smoke. Great upscale Irish bar.
  25. updated If you need a bank, cheap pizza, fried chicken, Chinese food, convenient store, tailor, dry cleaning, or most other services, the closest place to go is West Broadway St. (Southie) (see above). The street is a microcosm of Anytown, USA.
  26. updatedLocations in Boston, MA featuring WiFi hot spots - wireless 802.11b Internet access.

Please remember Robert. Picture of Robert's Face
Robert Hess, 29, an associate editor at MacWEEK, passed away January 12,1996 from complications due to pneumonia. In addition to being a fine reporter and a great guy, Robert was the founder of the Macworld party lists.
"Robert was truly a gem: technically savvy, insightful, honest, and approachable. We shall all miss him." -- Guy Kawasaki 1/16/96
"We lost a lot when we lost Robert on Jan. 12. His contributions permeated ... the magazine and the Macintosh community. We will miss him enormously, but the inspirations of his talent, strength and spirit remain with us." Ric Ford, MacInTouch
TidBITS remembers Robert (search for Hess on the page).
MacTech Remembers Robert.
