Elvin Jones - A Small Tribute

Elvin Jones died on Tuesday, May 18th at the age of 76. I don't know if he ever used a Macintosh, but with all the Macintosh music goings on, you'd hope someone in this market would do a tribute -- maybe some GarageBand loops in honor of this master drummer will appear online? May I introduce you to this drummer who will surely live on forever in the world of jazz?
Elvin Jones was an amazing drummer. My son and I had an opportunity to see him in 2001. At the age of 71 he was dynamic and created a drum sound like I'd never previously experienced. I was awestruck. His rhythms wove through the music, drove it forward, and created an atmosphere of intensity and subdivision that drew the band together. Across his career he created landscapes that had never been heard before in jazz.
"His main achievement was the creation of what might be called a circle of sound, a continuum in which no beat of the bar was necessarily indicated by any specific accent, yet the overall feeling became a tremendously dynamic and rhythmically important part of the whole group." (Leonard Feather, Encyclopedia of Jazz)
He was also a kind and generous man. He gave my jazz musician son and his drummer friend advice and spent quite a while talking about his craft. Even though a crowd waited to talk with him, he did not hurry or rush the teens away. Speaking with a new generation of budding jazz musicians seemed to delight him. We are sorry and mourn his passing. His complete biography can be found at Drummer World.
If you'd like to listen to a master musician practice his craft, you will surely gain from listening to one of his six albums at the iTunes store. For starters try Dear John C. or Earth Jones. |
