After a late goal by Freshman Dan Claus salvaged an early season 1 to 1 tie with Weymouth, Needham hit its stride in a 4 to 2 victory over Newton North behind two scores by forward Matt Chadwick. In the ensuing first place showdown with undefeated Framingham, Needham jumped on top as Matt Lanen converted a cross from Mitch Kumin and Zach Gilroy scored unassisted. Framingham closed to 2 to 1 in the second half, but minutes later Eric DeBear gathered in a header in the box from his fellow captain Colin Flynn and drove the clincher past Framinghams diving keeper for the 3 to 1 win. A 3 to 0 win over Natick was followed by another first place showdown, this time at Weymouth. Needham rose to the occasion, turning in its best effort of the season in a 3 to 0 win. DeBear scored on the games first shot and Flynn and Chris Yablonski established early control of the central midfield. Marking backs Dan Shapiro and Marcus Sholar shut down Weymouths strikers and when the hosts finally put a strong shot on goal in the waning minutes, Keeper Andy Dunn was there to make the save. | Eric Jacob Jeff S. |

In averaging over 4 goals a match, Needham relied upon a potent strike force comprised of Chadwick, DeBear, Claus and Pablo Taccioli, each of whom turned in multi-goal games during the season. Flynn and Yablonski logged the majority of minutes at the center halfback position, with Steve Hauschka providing strong support. At outside half, Kumin patrolled the right side, backed by Gilroy and Josh Machunski, while Lanen and Jeff Reinstein split time at the difficult left outside position. | Matt L. |

The defense was paced by skillful stopper Alex Wermer-Colan and tenacious sweeper Jacob Teplin, who rarely left the field during any match. The marking back rotation included Sholar and Shapiro, as well as Peter Bowering and Junior Jeff Sneider, a talented group which came to dominate its opponents over the second half of the season. Keepers Dunn and Jon Levy, who split time until a midseason injury sidelined Levy, turned in nine shutouts over the course of the season. | Pablo |
