Don Crabb's Impressive Biography - 1996

Computer Scientist


Don Crabb is the Associate Director of Graduate and Undergraduate Studies in Computer Science and a Lecturer at The University of Chicago, where he has taught undergraduate, graduate, and professional computing and computer science courses since 1979. Don also teaches professional publishing courses for the University's Extension. In his academic roles Don functions as an certified instructional software developer for IBM, Apple, NeXT, and Sun. Trained as an historian as well as a computer scientist, Don specializes in enpowering humanities and liberal arts students with a critical understanding of computer science and computer programming.

Columnist

Don is a Contributing Editor and Columnist for MacWEEK magazine - writing the weekly "Mac Manager" column, as well as other articles. Don is also the Chicago Sun-Times Computer Columnist and a technology editor, writing the column "Crabb on Computers", which is syndicated by the Chicago Sun-Times Features Syndicate, as well as special features and articles. "Crabb on Computers" appears in the Sun-Times Sunday Connected section, and the Monday and Wednesday Business sections, while Don's Product Reviews, Q & A column, and Frequently-Asked Questions appears daily in the Chicago Sun-Times Online, http://www.suntimes.com. Don has also written and edited textbooks on object-oriented programming for humanists, databases, and integrated software. His trade press books include MacWEEK Guide to System 7 (Emeryville: Ziff-Davis Press, 1991-1992), Running UNIX So it Doesn't Run You (Emeryville: Ziff-Davis Press, 1993), The Guide To Macintosh System 7.5 (Indianapolis: Hayden Books/MacMillan Computer Publishing/Apple Press, 1994-5), and The FileMaker Pro Book (Indianapolis: Hayden Books/MacMillan Publishing/Apple Press, 1996.

Don is a senior consulting editor for books published by Hayden Books, and the series editor of The Don Crabb Macintosh Library. Don will co-author (with Jeff Gagne) The Filemaker Pro Relational Book (with the support of Claris Corporation) during 1995, as well as an updated edition of The Guide to Macintosh System 7.5. The Word Book by Tonya Engst, The Excel 5 Starter Kit by Charles Seiter, The PowerMac Programming Starter Kit by Tom Thompson, The Programming Starter Kit for Macintosh by Jim Trudeau, Publishing on the World Wide Web for Macintosh by Greg Holden, Tricks of the Mac Game Programming Gurus, Mastering NetScape by Greg Holden, QuickTime: The Official Guide for Macintosh Users by Judith L. Stern and Robert A. Lettieri, MacWEEK Upgrading and Repairing Your Mac by Lisa Lee, and WebServer Construction Kit have already been published in the of The Don Crabb Macintosh Library. Don is also an editor and contributing writer of the sixth editon of PeachPit PressUs Macintosh Bible and the writer of the forthcoming Osborne/McGraw-Hill book, The Busy People Macintosh Book.

TV Producer and Personality

Don was the coproducer, cohost, and technical editor of the weekly syndicated cable MacTV show, now in reruns. He was also a frequent guest co-host of PCTV, a syndicated cable weekly TV show dealing with all kinds of computing topics. Currently, Don can be seen as an analyst discussing technology and computers on Chicago's NBC-TV station, WMAQ - Channel 5 and ChicagoUs FOX-TV station, WFLD - Channel 32. Don also can be heard as a regular contributor on the Kathy and Judy and Steve and Johnnie shows on WGN - AM 720, on The Ed Schwartz Show on WLUP - FM 97.9, on the Jonathan Brandmeier Show on WLUP - FM 97.9, and on the Bruce Wol show on WMVP - AM 1000. Don has also appeared as a contributor on a variety of radio shows on WLS - AM 890, WBBM - AM 780, WMAQ - AM 670, WNUA - FM 95.5, and WBEZ - FM 93.1. Don is currently developing a weekly TV show for ChicagoUs PBS-TV station, WTTW - Channel 11. (7/98: Don has his own show on WGN (AM 720 and RealAudio) every Sat night from 10 p.m. to 1 am. He also appears on other WGN shows, he shows up on Steve Dahl's show, and does the Fox Thing in the morning every Thursday morning, plus do twice weekly reports for Fox News Channel.)

In addition, Don is the permanent technology advisor to the Old Town School of Folk Music - Chicago's leading not-for-profit music school.
