Chuck Goolsbee

Midwestern Boy, always drawn westward. I stopped when I reached the sea. I love the mountains: to climb up them, ski down them, look at them. I feel weird without some peak in the distance at least. I studied art and somehow ended up being a network manager... go figure!

How did you personally
get into using the Macintosh family of computers?
I started a career in Graphic & Package Design the year before PostScript came along, so being the "new guy" all the "old guys" expected me to be up to speed on all this new tech. I always was lucky enough to work places with good Mac gear, so even as a freelancer I had access to the newest & best stuff.
Status: I guess I'm a geek first, evangelist second, followed by hopeless if you were to ask my wife. "Level-headed List Mom" would fit too.
First Mac:
Mac IIsi picture
The first I used was a 128k. The first I bought for myself was a IIsi.
Current Mac:
PowerPC 8500 picture
Mac 7200 picture
I have a growing collection. My day to day Mac is a Comet (2400c). I have a 7100, a couple of 8500s, a G3 in a Marathon Rackmount case, and a Centris 650 that somebody found in a dumpster and gave to me! I also still use my Newton 2000, and I have some old Apple & NeXT unix hardware around too. (Yeah I know, but we will all be UNIX geeks eventually. =) The IIsi went to my wife's sister so they can email each other.
When did you get your first modem? 1989. I have a ricochet wireless one now so I'm "on the wire - wirelessly" almost 24 hours a day.
Who did you call first? I'm embarrassed to say but probably one of the early Mac pirate boards like PacMac or the MAChine. "c-go" was my handle then, and I even burned the first "badlands" CD for "gunslinger" on my $17k+ first generation CD Burner at work. Ah, misguided youth. I'm far more responsible now that I'm in my 30's.
Present Occupation: My day job is managing a network for an Advertising agency, but my labor of love is managing the mac-managers mailing list and fostering both virtual and real communities of Macintosh network managers. I'm active in the user group ANMA (Apple Network Manager's Association) both locally and nationally. I also have a little web-hosting/colocation/ISP biz on the side.
Claim to Fame: In goal I shut out Cliff Ronning and a couple of other NHL'ers during a Saturday morning "casual hockey" at Burnaby (BC) 4 Rinks while wearing a Hawaiian print hockey jersey. Really!
Dream Job: I'd love to get paid for all my labors of love. I'd also love to be an NHL referee, but I'm an fat, slow, old goalie so that will alwys be just a dream.
Not So Random Thoughts...
Was there ever a time in your life that you had to "Think Different?" What was the situation and what did you do?
I saw how completely screwed-up the situation/management/network/etc of my former employers' UK Office was, and Like-An-Idiot* I volunteered to move me and my family half-way around the world because I *knew* I could fix it. I did fix it, and I would not trade it for much as a "life experience" (except maybe a huge pile of cash) but it ended up poorly for me and my family. I loved my UK staff and I accomplished what I set out to do but in my earnestness and eagerness to help I didn't protect myself and my interests. I learned much, especially to listen to the advice of those you admire and trust which in my case is my father and my wife. Both of them are lawyers too, so *definitely* listen to the advice of LAWYERS you know and trust. =)
How has using the Macintosh computer changed your life?
It transformed me from being an artist into a geek. It has allowed me to make more money since geeks get paid way more than artists in this world.
What is the weirdest thing in your office right now?
Toy metal cars representing my desires: A green 1973 VW Beetle to remind me of the one I sold when I moved to the UK. I regret selling that beauty almost every day.

A new VW Beetle which I will buy as soon as I can convince my wife that I need one.

A TurboColor NeXTstation, with that way cool black ADB keyboard and sleek round two button mouse. People still think it is a cool new computer, even six years after its birth.

A poster of my dream girl: Manon Rheaume. She was the first woman to play in "mens" professional sports. Add to that the fact that she is a goaltender, and gorgeous. Oh well, a guy can dream right?
My Passions are:
Networks and Computing of course. The mac-mgrs list and maintaining a community of Macintosh network managers, both virtual (mac-mgrs) and physical (ANMA). Alpinism. I like to quite literally get high. Altitude is good for you. Ice Hockey. I miss playing in net dearly thanks to two big guys who fell on me and crushed my knee. Goaltending is the ultimate zen activity. I still give something back to the sport I love by officating. I've been a referee since my college days. Here's a hint for you vocal fans/parents: Read the rulebook before you yell at me or my peers next time. =)
If you could have dinner with one person dead or alive who would that person be and what would you ask them?
Just one? I can't pick just one! Alive: Steve Wozniak. Ken Thompson & Dennis Ritchie. Linus Torvalds. Robert Pirsig. Tom Robbins. Salman Rushdie. Don Cherry. Ken Dryden. Gordie Howe & Wayne Gretzky. Manon Rheume. Yvon Chouinard. Heinrich Harrer. Sarah McLachlan. Ian Anderson.

Dead: Beethoven. Thomas Jefferson, Robert Blake. Claude Monet. Joe Tasker. Lewis & Clark. Alexander McKenzie. Roald Amundsen. Earnest Shackleton. Frank Zappa.

People I'd just like to see again: Either of my Grandfathers. Robert Hess (He was a great guy, MacWeek was never the same after his death.)
Do you play a musical instrument and/or are you in a band?
No I never have, though parts of my family are musical. I've always been visually inclined.
When I grow up I want to be:
Me. Maybe a thinner me with stronger knees would be nice.
The question never asked:
"Don't bother sir, I can spell your last name without any assistance from you."
