Will Hettchen

I'm a Civil Engineer, professionally registered. Graduated from University of Maryland at College Park. My home is in charming Ellicott City, MD. Hobbies include autocrossing my kit car (Kelmark GT), reading science fiction, and of course, playing with my computer. There's a dog hanging around home, too - a boxer named Bart. Member of Glen Mar United Methodist church.

How did you personally
get into using the Macintosh family of computers?
I first saw a Mac in use at my friend's apartment - an SE30. It had two screens, which was the coolest thing I had seen on a computer. He could do so much more with his computer than I could on our PC's at work.
Status: Clearly in the geek category.
First Mac:
LC III picture
LC III. 300MB hard drive, started with 8MB RAM, I think. B & W scanner, HP 500C printer. 2400 baud modem. Syquest 88MB for backup.
Current Mac:
Power Mac 7500
Power Mac 7500. Upgraded with 180 mHz 604e. 105 MB RAM, 500K cache, 9GB + 1 GB hard drives. Epson 600 printer, color scanner. Tape and the old syquest for backup. Geoport and cable modem for connection.
When did you get your first modem? Bought the modem with the computer. I guess around 1990.
Who did you call first? The Howard County library, of course.
Present Occupation: I work for the Army Corps of Engineers as a Resident Engineer at Aberdeen MD. I manage construction on a post where they blow things up.
Claim to Fame: NOT famous. Don't wanna be.
Dream Job: There's lots of jobs that would be fun. The trick is to enjoy the present. If I can come home at night and say I earned my pay, I'm happy.
Not So Random Thoughts...
Was there ever a time in your life that you had to "Think Different?" What was the situation and what did you do?
Based on the mass media, I must be "Thinking Differently" every day. Half the stuff I hear I have to reject. I thought the issue was "Think Different," though. Unfortunately, I don't get to use a Mac at work. In the field like my Resident Office, we are still stuck using 486's and early Pentiums. I try not to take much work home, even though my computer is much faster & nicer. I would bore you silly with all the "Different" thoughts I have about customer service at the Corps of Engineers. Just take my word for it when I say that I'm trying to be different.
How has using the Macintosh computer changed your life?
Until I got a Mac, computers were something to work on, not play with. Now, I actually enjoy using the computer at home. Even if I sat in front of a screen all day at work. Even if I'm not playing a game or surfing the net. Just using the computer is actually fun.
What is the weirdest thing in your office right now?
Besides the hole in the roof or the gopher under the floor? Probably my two momentoes - a brick and a piece of broken concrete. The brick came from a project where we removed PCB laden oil-soaked dirt and sent it to a kiln to make brick. The broken concrete came from the roof of a building. I walked all over that roof in the morning. Later that day the roof collapsed when my contractor walked across it. He broke an arm and a leg.
My Passions are:
Logical thinking. Enjoying life.
If you could have dinner with one person dead or alive who would that person be and what would you ask them?
If I only had one dinner, it would probably be Jesus. I'd ask him to explain the little imperfections in the world. The second dinner I would have with my Mom, who passed away. No further questions.
Do you play a musical instrument and/or are you in a band?
I've played a drum and a guitar in a band, and have sung in a choral group. For some reason, they always forget to ask me back the next night. I like listening to hard rock.
When I grow up I want to be:
Younger.
The question never asked:
I did not have sex with *that woman.*

Just The Facts, Please...
Biographical Tidbits: I've been involved in managing $1B in construction. Lots of neat projects like building a structure in the backyard of the President of American University to excavate for a bomb (it was a rusted gate instead), to a microchip lab. Inspected houses after the Northridge earthquake in L.A. On the car front, I built my own car. I raced it (technically autocrossed it, but not everyone knows what that is). Won some season trophies. Also won Best of Interior for it once. I've also won a few times in autocrosses in a street car. Education: Bachelor's at UMCP. Registered Professional Engineer in the state of MD.
Location at Birth: Baltimore, MD. Current Location: Ellicott City, MD.
Where you've
been in between:
Believe it or not, I have actually been outside of the state of MD. Always have lived and worked here, though. Astrological Sign: Saggitarius.
Available? Single. Still looking. Who knows? Chat Nick: Wilkelmark@aol.com but don't bother with mail unless you are on AOL. I'm sick of spam, so I auto screen out everything outside of AOL. I have another e-mail address set up for friends only.
Favorite Books: Right now, David Drake's Hammer's Slammers series. Also Clarke and A.E. Van Vogt. Favorite Music or Band: KIX. No question, I'm into hard rock.
Favorite Food: Tacos or pizza. It's a tough choice. Cat or Dog Person: I have a boxer named Bart. Weighs 65 lbs. However, I get along just fine with cats.
