Maureen McCarty

I work as a graphic artist for Macmillan Computer Publishing. Before that I designed ads and wrote a column for a local paper and have done the obligatory freelance gigs. Previous lives include costume designer, bartender, discjockey, and my ongoing career as a professional student. I currently live in Indianapolis in a house full of Snoopy stuff, with 2 other humans, 2 Macs, a Newton and a demanding fox terrier.

How did you personally
get into using the Macintosh family of computers?
It started as an extension of my photography... I'd read about this creature called Photoshop and it sounded interesting. When I decided to get a computer, I didn't have anyone around me who was either pro-Mac or pro-PC... so I did a lot of reading and looked at what was out there and picked the one I felt was best... a Mac!
Status: User and evangelist with just a pinch of geek (OK... maybe a tablespoon...)
First Mac:

A variation of the IIvx! It's such a great upgradeable little beast that in 1994 I got the 7100/AV logic board upgrade via Apple, and this year added a Newer Technology G3 card. Mix in a 4 gig internal, 8 gig external, 136 MB of ram and it'll hold it's own with any of the new kids. I do lust after an iMac 'tho (sshhh!! don't tell my Mac!)
When did you get your first modem? Early 1993
Who did you call first? Delphi... at the time it was the only way to get on the net from home (and only after 6pm at that!)
Present Occupation: Artist
Claim to Fame: Designing book covers at Macmillan - including Using Mac OS 8.5 and The Complete Idiot's Guide to Mac OS 8.5.
Dream Job: Designing Snoopy stuff!
Not So Random Thoughts...
Was there ever a time in your life that you had to "Think Different?" What was the situation and what did you do?
"Think Different" is just kind of native for me, so I've gotten used to it. Some people just accept this and are occasionally amused... other people just think I'm weird.
A few years ago my then-boyfriend and I were at the mall and we were doing the usual "What do you want to do/I don't know, what do you want to do" conversation shuffle and on a whim I said "go to New Orleans", he thought it sounded good. So we got in the car and left. Right then. We're both kind of different.
Sometimes I try to think normal but one of the voices in my head stops me before I've gone too far.
How has using the Macintosh computer changed your life?
Wow. There's not enough storage space on this website to relate it all, but professionally it's allowed me to work as a designer (as opposed to the usual restaurant gig ) while still doing art and I've met tons of interesting people.
What is the weirdest thing in your office right now?
Hmmm.... it's a tossup between the Snoopy extension cord and the absinthe spoon I designed for one of my class projects.
My Passions are:
Snoopy, Macs, fast Pontiacs, reading, art in general, visiting new places, the movie "The Crow", velvet Doc Martens, - not in any particular order.
If you could have dinner with one person dead or alive who would that person be and what would you ask them?
Neil Gaiman. No specific question... it's just that inspiration and creativity are usually contagious and I love his writing, so hanging out would be fun. And if Dream could join us it would be even better!
Do you play a musical instrument and/or are you in a band?
Piano.
When I grow up I want to be:
Grow up?? Why??
The question never asked:
Where would you like your complimentary G3 Powerbook delivered, Ms. McCarty??
