Don Oehlert

I've been with Apple for about 11 years; in the computer industry for about 20. I'm happily married. We have 3 children, and one dog.

How did you personally
get into using the Macintosh family of computers?
I was hired at Apple in September of 1987.

My introduction to the Mac was in January of 1987. I spent about 45 rented-time minutes in a quick-print shop - on a Mac Plus. I was redoing my resume so I could get a job at Apple.

I fell in absolute LOVE with the Mac on my fourth day at Apple - when it finally hit me that installing applications on a computer could indeed, be this easy!
*Status: Hopelessly evangelistic. I LOVE AppleScript. I LOVE the Mac.

Not So Random Thoughts...
Was there ever a time in your life that you had to "Think Different?" What was the situation and what did you do?
Yes, I was laid off from my first "real job" two weeks before our wedding. THAT was stressful. My new wife and I went to Florida for our honeymoon... While I was laying on the beach, I was writing samples, looking through ads in newspapers for work, and updating my resume. First sun-burned resume in history, I believe.
How has using the Macintosh computer changed your life?
I now HAVE a life. I used to work in support at a company that sold Unix-based products. No life.
What is the weirdest thing in your office right now?
The snootflute that I received from an AppleScripting partner, Chuck Weger.
My Passions are:
My family (3 kids), woodworking, sociological perspectives on the Civil War. As Shelby Foote put it "the Civil War made it - the United States 'are' - to the United States 'is'."
If you could have dinner with one person dead or alive who would that person be and what would you ask them?
I'd have dinner Abraham Lincoln in a heartbeat.
I'd ask him what he believes he would have accomplished had his life not been ended prematurely.
Do you play a musical instrument and/or are you in a band?
No on both. Dangit. I play the CD player.
When I grow up I want to be:
I never want to grow up!
The question never asked:
Where will you be sitting during the first game the Cubs play in the World Series?
